  • Joan was the interim executive director of the International Association for the Study of Pain at the time I was President-Elect of this international multidisciplinary professional society. I was impressed by how quickly she “got up to speed” when she assumed this role. She very effectively oversaw the staff and worked closely with the society leadership to identify and address important issues during this transition period. Her contributions included helping to prepare for and conduct an international Council meeting shortly after she came on board; continuing the strategic planning effort; and moving forward the work of committees, new initiatives, policy development, and use of business plans. She provided a thoughtful, frank, and insightful analysis of the organization, with excellent and very helpful recommendations for future directions regarding governance. She is highly professional, personable, and knowledgeable about organization governance and strategic planning. She was a true pleasure to work with. I recommend her highly and without reservation.

  • One of the most introspective, informed processes with which I've been involved in my 30 years of practice.

Money well spent in order to make a full knowledge based decision during a very hectic time for our association.

Very strongly endorse Transition Management Consulting, Inc. I was not aware of how detailed the process should really be to be effective.

If you have never gone through TMC's process, it is a must.

  • I am writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Mr. Harvey Tillipman, who has served as the Interim Executive Director of AMDA for the past year. Mr. Tillipman began his work at AMDA in January of 2012 following the departure of a long tenured executive director. These types of transitions can be a stressful time for an organization, its employees and board members, most of whom are not local. Mr. Tillipman brought both competence and a calm demeanor to the job and was a true stabilizing force for the organization during 2012.

As board president, I interacted with Mr. Tillipman on an almost weekly basis. He was able to evaluate a complex organization and use his time effectively. He was a good listener and then was able to focus on the priorities at hand without getting lost in too much detail. His two greatest strengths were in managing the budget and providing leadership and direction to the staff. He also was of significant assistance to the organization in its search for a full time executive director.

While AMDA is excited to begin a new chapter in its history, the board and staff will miss Mr. Tillipman. It was a challenging year for me personally as board president, and I could not have succeeded in my role without the help and assistance of Mr. Tillipman. I would not hesitate to recommend him for another interim executive director position.
